I'm taking the Challenge to fight MS!

I am taking part in the MS Gong Ride Virtual, the Ride to Fight MS.

I start my challenge on 1 October. You will be able to see my progress here on my page and support me along the way!

Why am I doing this?

Well, I'm 65 years old and want to keep challenging myself.  The last time I rode the Sydney to Gong ride was, I think, 1993  Twenty-seven (27) years later I reckon I'm still up for the challenge I have chosen - to ride the Gong distance (82 km)  three (3) times during the month of October.  Your support will spur me on for those 51.2 kms each week, for sure (total distance 234 km)

Why am I fundraising?

My daughter has been supporting this cause for several years now.  Charlene has a personal connection with MS as a very good friend of hers has MS.  So I guess I'm supporting my daughter in her cause, her friend (Lee) whom she cares for deeply, and all others like her who have to deal with MS ... every single moment of every single day.

Thank you for your support!

6th MS Gong Ride

Friday 30th Oct
Today I rode for the first time since the BIG 3-day ride 10 days ago. I enjoyed it. Only 2 more days of the MS Gong campaign remain.

5th MS Gong Ride - the BIG one

Sunday 25th Oct
Wanting the challenge of emulating the usual one-day Sydney to Gong ride Colin and I opted to ride to Goulburn from Canberra in a single day.  This we did on Sun 18 October, making pretty good time (5 hours).  We stayed a night and then returned via a different route over a 2 day period (pretty smart, eh!).
Strava recorded a total distance of 208.46 km and a time of 11'21" over the 3 days (though my bike computer showed 225 km from start to finish).
The pictures tell the story and I'm really proud of us.
Note: I will never, ever repeat the Tarago - Fyshwick route - roads far too narrow, too many B-double trucks and some very nasty hills.

4th MS Gong Ride

Sunday 18th Oct
Today Colin and I emulated the 90 km Sydney to Gong ride by riding from Canberra to Goulburn. 99.6 km were captured in Strava - though we actually rode a couple of kms more whilst we found our AirBnB for the night. We're pretty tired but stoked to have made the distance in 5 hours' riding time (actually 4 hrs 59 mins). Not a bad effort for two 60-somethings eh! 😊

3rd MS Gong Ride

Wednesday 14th Oct
I had a pretty good ride for MS this morning - despite the experience of 10 out of 12 red lights in a 3.4 km stretch coming back into Canberra City! Anyway, good training for a BIG ride starting Sunday.

2nd MS Gong Ride

Friday 9th Oct
Only a short ride ride today - wind does not excite me. 😏

1st official MS Gong Ride 2020

Friday 2nd Oct
We eased into our 1st official MS Gong Ride 2020 effort this morning. No wind, blue skies and we enjoyed a late breakfast at our favourite Duffy café.

Week 5 Training Ride - Tues 29 Sept

Thursday 1st Oct
Distance was my focus for today's training ride. Speed was down a bit today because I had Colin with me. 😁 Ok, that's a bit unfair since a) he's had little time to cycle during the last month while he's been doing volunteer work in Cobargo (building fences for farmers) AND b) he also had access only to his 20-inch wheel, 7-speed (1 cog) foldup bike. So, on balance, I think we did great. The picture tells the story.

Week 4 Training Ride - Mon 21 Sept

Thursday 1st Oct
Pretty happy with my training ride this morning along the Majura Parkway to Gungahlin, and back home via Mitchell, the city and Parkes.

Week 3 Training Ride

Wednesday 16th Sep
A good training ride yesterday through the Jerrabomberra Wetlands and around Lake Burley Griffin on a lovely Canberra day. There's still plenty of time to consider sponsoring my efforts in the MS Gong Ride cause. Many thanks to those who have already been so generous.

Day 1 Training

Wednesday 2nd Sep
Today was my first real day of training for the MS Gong virtual Ride.  I wasn't too unhappy with how it went since I went solo  (Colin is away volunteering and I do appreciate his company in our activities) AND the wind was annoyingly strong.  In fact, I considered aborting just 1.5 km from home (what a wuss, eh!) but figured I'd best soldier on.

At least there was a coffee and honey walnut biscuit in it for me since my destination was a favourite café in Duffy, south-west of Canberra.

Thank you to my Sponsors
