My Updates

Challenge Completed!!

Monday 8th Nov
Hello supporters

Yesterday I completed the MS Gong Virtual Challenge. My target was 500km over a month of riding and I cruised to the finish with a nice (mostly downhill) 22km ride along the Catoctin Ridge Road near Camp David in the US ( I have uploaded a picture). My smart trainer together with the Fulgaz app made achieving this goal possible given the amount of "indoors" riding I had to do to get done.

However, the last week was hardly a cruise. I had to do 233 km in a week which was a bit daunting. I have cycled all over the world this week including doing rolling hills in France, steep climbs in English Cotswolds and a long ride along Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne. I even did a real ride along the M7 two Saturdays ago.

It has been a great journey and I really appreciated the support especially from a couple of you on the last couple of days. I achieved my fundraising goal, my cycling goal and partially achieved my lycra fit goal - it is still a pretty sad look but it is not as tight fitting as before.

Hopefully I will see some of you on the real Gong ride next year.

Thank you again.

Kind regards

One Week to Go

Monday 1st Nov
Hello Sponsors

It has been a while since my last blog update. The MS Gong team had a few technical glitches including losing my webpage for a few weeks. It got reinstated last Wednesday.

I have managed to ride 267km so far in the challenge period so I have some way to go to get to the 500km target by next Sunday evening. I have not been as consistent as I would have liked but work and other priorities have got in the way a bit.

It will be a bit of challenge to get 233km done in a week but not impossible with some reasonable efforts on my part. The indoor trainer is helpful in getting some riding done every day even when the weather or time is unsuitable for riding outdoors.

Thank you all again for your generous support and encouraging words.

Kind regards

Pre Event Update

DATE POSTED: 10.10.2021

After a slow start I achieved some good training kilometres in the lead up to the event commencement day. My training was helped along by my ride buddy who got back on her bike after some serious surgery. Always helps when you have someone expecting you to turn up. I didn’t quite hit the training target I set for myself but it was enough to get me prepared. Looks like next week’s riding will be on the indoor trainer because it is going to be a bit wet. I hate riding in the rain and avoid it wherever possible. No pictures for this update but will take some when I can do the “four bridges” ride once the COVID 19 restrictions have eased. Whilst where I live is very hilly it is also beautiful with the mix of bush forest and river valleys.

First Post Winter Training Ride - Hillawong Circuit

Wednesday 27th Oct
DATE POSTED: 13.09.2021

Finally got back on the bike today. Where I live in Illawong is essentially hills so alternatively hard and easy to get around on a bike. Did 28km on the Hillawong circuit. I could only handle two cracks of the Alfords Point Hill cycleway today so a relatively short ride of 28km achieved. I am happy with that. My aim is to get up to 40km rides on a regular basis which means quite a few more repetitions of the Hillawong circuit in my immediate future.

The Beginning - 9 September 2021

Wednesday 27th Oct
DATE POSTED: 09.09.2021

I have never been a "blogger" so this seems a reasonable place to start. It is now 30 days until the Gong Virtual event commencing on October 9th for 30 days. Hence I thought this was the right time to start a blog.

The three reasons I am participating in this event in order of importance are:

1. Raise $1,000 for a good cause;
2. Challenge myself by riding 500km over 30 days; and
3. Lose 10kg, because my "lycra look" is unfortunate.

So how am I going with these goals so far?

My generous sponsors have made achieving the first goal a breeze as it is already done. However, the good people at Gong Virtual would like me to seek greater heights so please keep the donations coming.

I hung my bike up in late July after my last training ride and it seems to have remained so since then. I was training for the Orange Newcrest 100km event at the time and when that got cancelled, I decided to bunker down for the balance of winter because each day since then was either too cold, windy or rainy to get on the bike (or so I told myself). Now that the weather has improved with our glorious spring days I have run out of such excuses.

Having an "event" to train for and participate in provides the right motivation to get back on the bike. To achieve 500km I need to ride a minimum of 17km a day or 34km every two days. This is not overly difficult but consistency and discipline has always been an issue for me.

I am going to give myself a training goal of 350km during the lead up to October 9th just so I get into the swing of things.

Officially I am going to start tomorrow morning because I like putting hard things off.

A lack of training and loads of delicious winter food prepared by my wonderful wife Sheryl has caused the bulges in my lycra cycling gear to become even firmer and less flattering. Hence the weight loss goal so I can present better in lycra as long as the light is right (i.e. very dark).

That is enough from me. I will report back in a week or so to let you know how the training is going.

Have a great day
